How to Find Delight in God and Commit Your Plans to Him {Psalm 37:3-6}

When we commit our lives to God, we will become radiant in body, mind, and soul

Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this. He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

-Psalm 37:3-6

Lately, I’ve been craving a life on some land. I want to live among wide open spaces. I’m dreaming of waking up and walking outside to beautiful pastures, feeding horses, and watering a garden. I can see it in my mind. But more than having horses, a house with a view, or a lush garden, I want to live in the company of God and walk with him.

While I would love to be a semi-modern homesteader, ultimately I want to trust God with every part of my life and to find my joy in an abiding relationship with Christ. To delight in someone means to enjoy their presence — to happily keep company with them. But we don’t do this with strangers. We have to know that person well. So the more we encounter the true character of Chris, the more we will love him and delight in Him.

The promise in this scripture is not that we’ll get our dream home, baby, guy, or life, but that as we delight in the Lord and seek him, our souls will be satisfied. Our hearts will be content. The desires of our hearts will change and be for the better and eternal things of life.

I want the fruit of a life spent in the presence of Christ. I want to find joy and satisfaction in God, not the material things of this world. As we abide in God, we find joy. Our souls experience rest. And then we’ll discover we already have everything we need.

To commit ourselves to the Lord is to give everything we have back to Him because all we have are gifts we didn’t earn, but that He gave to us. Committing ourselves to God is about entrusting everything to him — our talents, resources, relationships, jobs, and lives and believe that He will give us all we need. It’s about trusting that His plans for our lives are best, even in hard times. Then we must be patient and wait on Him. When we commit our lives to God, we will become radiant in body, mind, and soul, and He will keep us in perfect peace and fill us with the fullness of joy.

What are the desires of your heart? How can you commit your plans to God, and trust He has the best plans and future for you?
