I love a good cup of coffee, but I have developed an unhealthy dependency on it and decided to break it. I’m on day five without my morning coffee and have replaced it with a warm cup of matcha with frothy milk and I’m loving it!
I just learned about the overwhelming health benefits of matcha which has motivated me to keep drinking it consistently especially as we enter the winter months and flu season. I love making mine with foamed milk, stevia, and honey. I’ll still be enjoying coffee, but I’m excited to have found another morning drink I love as an alternative.
Here are five benefits of drinking matcha tea:
1. It’s Rich in Antioxidants
Matcha is packed with catechins, a type of antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage and supports overall health. Matcha has three times more antioxidants than green tea!
2. It Boosts Energy and Focus
The combination of caffeine and L-theanine in matcha provides a calm, focused energy without the jitters that coffee can cause.
3. It Boosts Your Metabolism
Matcha can boost metabolism and help the body burn fat more efficiently, making it a popular addition to weight loss routines.
4. It Enhances Mental Clarity
L-theanine in matcha promotes relaxation and mental clarity, supporting better focus and concentration.
5. It Detoxifies the Body
High levels of chlorophyll in matcha act as a natural detoxifier, helping cleanse the body from harmful toxins.
Here’s how to match a mean cup of matcha!
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of matcha powder (high-quality, ceremonial grade)
- 2 ounces of hot water (not boiling, around 175°F or 80°C)
- 6-8 ounces of hot water or steamed milk (depending on preference)
- Optional: honey or sweetener (if you like it sweet)
Steps:
Boil Water: Heat water to about 175°F (80°C). Avoid boiling water, as it can make the matcha taste bitter.
Sift the Matcha (optional): To prevent clumps, sift 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into a small bowl using a fine mesh sieve.
Add Hot Water (2 oz): Pour a small amount (about 2 ounces) of hot water into the bowl with the matcha powder.
Whisk the Matcha: Using a bamboo whisk (chasen), whisk the matcha and water in a “W” or zigzag motion until it becomes frothy and smooth. This should take about 15-30 seconds. If you don’t have a whisk, you can use a small milk frother.
Add More Water or Milk: Once the matcha is smooth and frothy, add 6-8 ounces of hot water or steamed milk (for a matcha latte), depending on your preference.
Sweeten (optional): If you prefer your matcha sweetened, add honey, agave, or your favorite sweetener and stir well.
Enjoy: Your hot matcha is ready to drink!
Give it a try! I think you’ll like it!
