The Best Times to Take a Social Media Break

What would you hope to gain from doing a mini or extended social media detox?

In my opinion, there is never a bad time to take a social media break! Every person I talk to who has taken an extended break away from social media enthusiastically tells me how much they loved it and how happier they were. Research has shown that less than a week off of instantly decreases anxiety and increases happiness. There are many special seasons, occasions, or milestones in your life that can especially help you get the most out an extended social media break, which will allow you to be more present with your life. Saying no to social media for a little while or even forever can help you say yes to the better things of life.

Some good times to unplug:

  • January to prepare for a new year
  • During lent to grow closer to God
  • After a breakup or divorce
  • During a season of mental health struggles
  • After you get engaged
  • Before your wedding
  • During a health crisis
  • During a vacation
  • During a honeymoon
  • Before you start school
  • When you’re pregnant
  • After you have a baby
  • While you grieve the loss of someone you love
  • During the summer
  • December, during the holidays
